Iraq (Official name – The Republic of Iraq), is a country in Western Asia, bordering Turkey to the north, Saudi Arabia to the south, Iran to the east, Syria to the west, Kuwait to the southeast, and Jordan to the southwest.
Iraq got its independence from Britain’s rule in the year 1932, and thus “The Kingdom of Iraq” came into existence. However, the monarchy system was abolished in the year 1958 and the Republic of Iraq was formed. From 1968 till the year 2003, Iraq was controlled by the Ba’ath Party (Iraqi-led faction). The Ba’ath Party lost its power when United States of America invaded with multinational forces, and thereafter multi-party parliamentary elections were held in Iraq. In the year 2011, America completely withdrew its presence in Iraq.
In Iraq, one of the oldest rift is between the Sunnis and Shiites in Islam. Iraq has a Shia-majority population, and a Shia-led government under Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, and a Sunni minority, which ruled the country for many years, right from the Ottoman Empire till the U.S. invasion in the year 2003 that forced Saddam Hussein to leave power and authority.
The recent Iraq civil war plays out on numerous levels between Sunnis and Shiites; however the first and very important point is about how to share power in a 21st century state. The prime minister (a Shiite) has failed terribly in developing a success formula to share power with the Sunnis (the traditional political masters in Iraq). As the civil war worsens, and Iraq burns, the situation poses a major threat even on a global level. What lies ahead in the future?
