Ashtakavarga Calculation: A Chart to Precise Predictions
What is Ashtakavarga? Connecting the Dots
Ashtakvarga is one of the methods in Vedic Astrology to find out the strength of the planets and the houses in your birth chart. It is a way of unlocking the hidden potential of one’s kundali, as sometimes the birth charts are not enough to show that on their own. Ashtakavarga divides 12 Moon Signs into eight further categories for eight planets. Interestingly enough, Rahu and Ketu, the Lunar Nodes are not considered in Ashtakavarga. The Chart System of Prediction
The Ashtakavarga system of prediction works on the Bindu or dots. These are basically a point system where each planet except Rahu and Ketu are allotted a specific number in a specific house of your Kundali or birth chart. The higher number denotes the strength of that house in your Kundali. For example, if you have a higher value in the 11th house, which is the house of income, that would be a good sign as the planets in that house have a strong position and influence your Kundali more than others. For that reason, many believe Ashtakavarga in astrology to be even more precise than the birth chart or Janam Kundali analysis. However, the birth chart would be necessary to understand the Ashtakavarga table and make the most accurate predictions. Now that you understand the fundamentals of Ashtakvarga, let’s see how it is counted. Is there a favourable yoga in your kundali? As we can see above, there are three types of Ashtakavarga chart, each of them used for different purposes. The Bhinna is for understanding the influence of an individual planet on the birth chart. Prasthara takes that process further, and with the help of Bhinna Ashtakavarga charts, it makes it easier to predict Dasha and Transits, and their positive or negative intensity on your birth chart. The Samudaya Ashtakavarga is a total score and analysis of a house. Here is an example of Samudaya (Sarv) Ashtakavarga. If the dots in the Aries zodiac sign for each planet of Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn are 3, 7, 1, 3, 6, 5, and 4 respectively, it will give us the points for Aries as 3+7+1+3+6+5+4=29. Combining all the points for all the moon signs will give us Samudaya Ashtakavarga.Ashtakavarga Calculation
For some, the calculation and the interpretation of the chart can be intimidating. Here is how the Dots or Scores are calculated, and what they mean:- In SarvAshtakavarga, The 12 Moon signs are allotted Seven Planets: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Rahu and Ketu are not considered, as mentioned above. In some methods, the ascendant is counted as the eighth planet.
- The contribution to each planet along with the ascendant is decided. The Bindus or Dots will denote the positive or negative impact of the planets on 12 moon signs. These dots are nothing, but the score of influence of the planet, which ranges from 0 to 8 or 1 to 7, depending on the reader, for each moon sign.
- After evaluating the dots or scores, the total Ashtakavarga points between 18 to 25 or 19 to 26are considered to be average. Points above 25-26 are likely to bring positive effects and influences for the natives. However, if the house has a malefic or retrograde planet, it will decrease the points for that house. Higher points indicate prosperity and bring out the best of whatever that house represents in native’s life.
What is a Good Score?
Is there such a thing as a Good Ashtakavarga score? Is a high Ashatakavarga score a good thing? As mentioned above, anything between 18-25 is considered to be an average score, and everything above that is good. The house with the lowest score would be your weakest house, and the house with the most score would be the strongest. Points between 25 and 28 suggest above-average scores. Above 28 are considered strong houses, and you will find yourself benefit from those aspects of your life. Since there are seven planets and 12 moon signs, the total score of an Ashtakavarga chart would be 337 (excluding ascendant).Less than 18 | Bad |
18-25 | Average |
25-28 | Good |
More than 28 | Excellent |
Compared to Other Ways of Predictions

It can let you know which aspects of your life are the strongest and which of them are on the weaker side. Knowing that will help you make informed decisions.
