Kundli Matching — also called Gun Milan, Kundali Milan or Janam Kundli matching – is the Vedic practice of comparing two people’s horoscopes to judge their compatibility for marriage. It looks at how the planets, signs and Nakshatras in one chart relate to the other, and expresses the result as a score out of 36 gunas.

What is Gun Milan?

Gun Milan is the scoring system at the heart of kundli matching for marriage. It compares eight compatibility factors – called kootas – between the bride’s and groom’s charts, based mainly on the position of the Moon and the birth Nakshatra. Each koota carries a set number of points, adding up to a maximum of 36 gunas. 

The higher the total, the more naturally compatible the two charts are considered to be. In practice, 18 out of 36 is the traditional minimum for a match to be deemed acceptable.

Traditional Kundli Matching uses Ashtakoot Milan – “eight-fold matching.” Each of the eight kootas measures a different dimension of compatibility and carries its own point value. Together they total 36 gunas.

Ashtakuta and their importance in Marriage Matching

Here’s what each ‘code’ represents:

• Varna: Varna is divided into four categories: Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra. It symbolizes compatibility, ego, and spiritual understanding. In the process of Kundli Gun Matching, the character is given a value of 1, i.e. it will be considered as a Gun Matching.
• Vashya: Vashya is divided into five parts. Manav/Nara (human beings), Van-char (wild animals), Chatushpad (small animals), Jalchar (sea creatures), Keeta (insects). It reflects the attraction, power and control equations for a couple. Vasya is given 2 value points.
• Tara: In horoscope compatibility for marriage, Tara is divided into 27 nakshatras. As the name suggests, Tara reflects the birth Nakshatra (Nakshatra) compatibility and is given 3 value points.
• Yoni: Yoni is divided into 14 animals like buffalo, cat, cow, dog, elephant, rabbit/deer, horse, lion, mongoose, monkey, rat, sheep, snake, tiger. Yoni represents the intensity of mutual love and intimacy between couples. It has been given 4 value points.
• Graha Maitri: Given 5 value points, Graha Maitri is the compatibility of the Moon between the bride and groom. It also shows their mental compatibility and friendship that they will share.
• Gana: Gana is divided into three categories. Deva (Devas, Gods with Satva Guna – spiritual knowledge and awareness), Humans (Humans, with Rajo Guna – intelligence, war, bravery, helping matters), Rakshasas (Demons, with Tamo Guna – greed and desires). It reflects the level of overall behavior and temperament and is given a score of 6.
• Rashi: Along with the Rashi, the position of the Moon in the horoscope of both the bride and groom is important. While matching the magazines, it is inauspicious if the groom’s Moon is in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th house from the bride’s Moon. When the Moon is in the seventh and twelfth house, it is considered auspicious. Moon situated in the twelfth house from the groom’s horoscope is inauspicious for a girl. Auspicious places will be the second, third, fourth, and fifth house. The zodiac sign symbolizes emotional support and love. This is equivalent to 7 value points.
• Nadi: Related to matters of children, health, and genes, Nadi is divided into three aspects: Adi, Madhya and Antya. With a value of 8, this property is one of the most important parts of the ‘code’ when it comes to matching.

What Is a Good Kundli Matching Score?

Kundli Matching scores are read in bands rather than as a pass/fail mark. As a general guide:

• Below 18 gunas – traditionally not recommended without an astrologer’s review.
• 18 to 24 gunas – acceptable; a workable match.
• 25 to 32 gunas – good to very good compatibility.
• 33 to 36 gunas – excellent; a rare and highly harmonious match.

A high number is reassuring, but it isn’t the whole story. An experienced astrologer weighs the score alongside doshas, the Navamsa chart, and each partner’s planetary periods before drawing any conclusion.

Doshas to Check When Matching Kundlis

Alongside the guna score, matching also checks for doshas – planetary afflictions that can affect married life. The three most discussed are: 

Mangal Dosha (Manglik Dosha) – Arises when Mars sits in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of a chart. It’s associated with tension or friction in marriage. Importantly, when both partners are Manglik, the dosha is often considered cancelled, and traditional remedies exist in other cases. 

Nadi Dosha – Occurs when both partners share the same Nadi, costing all 8 Nadi points. Linked to health and progeny, it’s taken seriously — but Vedic tradition also recognises several exceptions that cancel it.

Bhakoot Dosha – Raised by certain Moon-sign position combinations between the two charts. It can affect emotional and financial harmony, and, like the others, has recognised cancellations.

Mars Defect in Ascendant Chart

• Checking horoscope compatibility can also help you find out Mangal Dosh if either the bride or groom has it. If you have one, you can fix it already and it can help you have a smooth marriage without any worries.
• Although Mangal Dosh can bring some problems in your life, astrology also suggests some measures to protect you. If Mangal Dosh is found in your horoscope, then you should consult an astrologer. If both the bride and groom have the same type of Mangal Dosh, then they can get married as the Mangal Dosh will be neutralized and is unlikely to create any problem in the marriage.
• When Mars is placed in the first, fourth, seventh, eighth, or twelfth house, the person is said to have Mangal Dosha. Depending on the effect it has on a person’s life, it is divided into Anshika Manglik, Partial Mangal Dosh, Purna Manglik, Purna Mangal Dosh, Purna Mangal Dosh and Dwi Mangal Dosh.

What If the Kundli Don’t Match?

A low guna score or a dosha is not a verdict against the marriage. Vedic astrology has always included dosha parihara – recognised cancellations and remedies – precisely because a single number can’t capture two whole lives.
