According to ancient texts, Lord Vishnu performed severe penance to reduce the impact of a terrible cyclone that was destroying the world. As a reward for this penance, Goddess Mahatripura came to Vishnu and calmed the storm.

After this event, at the beginning of the Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi of the month of Saurashtra, when it was midnight, Bagalamukhi emerged from Haridra Sarovar (meaning turmeric lake). Her Jayanti is celebrated on vaishakha shukla ashtami even though this event took place during Chaturdashi.

Step-by-Step Puja Vidhi for Baglamukhi Ashtami

The following steps are outlined for the proper way to perform Baglamukhi Jayanti puja:

  • Take a bath early in the morning and place the idols of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Baglamukhi together on a platform covered with a yellow cloth in the north direction at a clean place in the house
  • Now purify the entire room and the platform with Ganga water.
  • Place a silver, copper or clay pot on the platform, fill the pot with water and place a coconut on it.
  • Take a resolution to perform the puja and worship all the gods and goddesses installed on the platform with Vedic mantras
  • Now perform the following: Aavahna, Aasan, Paadya, Adhrya, Aachman, Snan, Vastra, Saubhagya Sutra, Chandan, Roli, Haldi, sindoor, Durva, Bilvapatra, Abhooshan, Pushp-Haar, Sugandhit Dravya, Dhoop-Deep, Naivedya, Phal, Paan, Dakshina, Aarti, Pradakshina, and Mantra Pushpaanjali.
  • Chant Om Hleem Baglamukhi Devyai Hleem Om Namah
  • Distribute prasadam and perform the evening aarti of the Mother after the puja
