According to legends, there was a king in a kingdom, who after waiting for many years got the son Ratna. An astrologer said about the king’s son that, the day he gets married, he will die only after four days. The king was deeply saddened to hear this from the astrologer. To avoid this, he sent the prince to a place where no woman lives nearby. One day a princess passed by. Both the prince and the princess looked at each other and were fascinated and married each other.

According to the prediction of the astrologer, exactly four days later the eunuchs came to take the life of the prince. Seeing the eunuch, the prince’s wife started mourning. Seeing this, the Yamdoot requested Yamraj and asked him to suggest some way to save his life. On this, Yamraj said that the creature who worships me on the night of Trayodashi of Kartik Krishna Paksha, will light a lamp facing south with a garland.
