Putrada Ekadashi Significance

Putrada Ekadashi is celebrated two times in a year, as per the Hindu Panchang. The first celebration occurs in Paush month’s Shukla Paksha and the second one occurs in Sawan month’s Shukla Paksha. The term “Putrada” literally means ‘one who gives a son,’ but more popularly, this Ekadashi is related to the desire for having children in general and having their well-being. 

With a considerable import for devotees troubled by issues of childbirth and those praying for their children’s happiness, health, and prosperity, Putrada Ekadashi is truly observed as an auspicious day. This day is dedicated to Lord Vishnu for worship with pure devotion and prayers requesting family wishes to come true.   

Putrada Ekadashi Puja Vidhi for Child Blessings

On Putrada Ekadashi, devotees traditionally worship Lord Vishnu, Bal Gopal or Shri Krishna and observe the prescribed fasting rituals. The following steps can be followed:

1. On Dashami, the day preceding Ekadashi, indulge in a small and ideal meal and desist from giving in to any kind of indulgence. People performing the vrat are told to remain celibate and disciplined.
2. On the morning of Ekadashi, one should take a bath and offer a proper Sankalp for the fast. The puja of Lord Vishnu should be performed using water from the Ganga, Tulsi leaves, sesame seeds, flowers, and Panchamrit. 
3. Observe the fast all day long. In the evening, perform Deep Daan and listen to Putrada Ekadashi Vrat Katha. People performing fast on fruits may take phalahar after evening worship and rituals.
4. On Dwadashi, the fast should be concluded at the right time according to Parana.  Traditionally, one donates food, money, and other valuables to Brahmins or needy people before breaking the fast.  
5. People wishing to have children may worship Lord Krishna in the morning. 
6. The ritual involves chanting of the Santan Gopal Mantra and offering of the prasad to Lord Krishna.  Besides, it is necessary to feed other people. 

Putrada Ekadashi Vrat Katha

According to the age-old tale of Putrada Ekadashi, King Suketu Man ruled the kingdom of Bhadravati. The king and queen were worried since they still did not have children even after years of marriage. 

Due to the anxiety in his mind, the King went into the woods on his horse. As he moved deeper into the woods, he became thirsty and began to look for water. Finally, he came upon a beautiful lake which was surrounded by many hermitages of saints. The holy men were chanting mantras and the king fulfilled his thirst. 

When the king asked the sages what they were doing there, they told him that they had come to take bath in the holy lake. They also told him that today was the day of Putrada Ekadashi and that doing the vrat would help a childless couple have children. 

The king came back to his kingdom and performed the fast of Putrada Ekadashi according to their guidance. After completing the Parana on the day of Dwadashi, the king continued praying with great devotion. The story demonstrates that as a result of the vrat, the royal couple was indeed blessed, and Queen Shaivya conceived and gave birth to a son. 

The narrative indicates that the observance of Putrada Ekadashi is presumed to help couples having the problem of conceiving. The positive impact of the vrat is believed to be experienced even by those who are just watching or reading about it.
