As per the mythological Putrada Ekadashi Katha, there was King Suketuman and his queen Shaivya of Bhadravati. They had everything in their Bhadravati kingdom. It was a prosperous kingdom. However, the King and queen were sad and always worried as they had no children. The kingdom did not have any heir.
The King thought of committing suicide but gave up the idea as it would be a sin to take away life.
When being sad about his situation, he felt like going to the forest instead of the Rajpath. The King saw many birds and animals in the forest, and he kept on watching them. After that, he went and sat on the banks of a river where there was an ashram. He went to the ashram and told sage Muni about his grievance and how it was bothering him. That is when the sage told the King about Putrada Ekadashi. King kept this fast and also passed it as per law. The queen, within a few days, conceived, and they were blessed with a baby boy. This was the putrada ekadashi story that holds a huge significance especially for people looking to be parents.
Lord Krishna, the avatar of Lord Vishnu, is worshipped on this day. The importance of Putrada Ekadashi is mainly for the couples to be blessed with children.

Take a bath early in the morning and keep the Pausha Putrada Ekadashi Vrat as Nirjal, Jala Vrat or Phalhari vrat.
If you have kept the vrat to have children on the day of Putrada Ekadashi, then you should worship infant Shri Krishna, Shri Narayana and Lord Krishna’s hair.
Both husband and wife should worship lord Krishna together. Offerings of yellow fruits, flowers, basil and panchamrit are given during the Putrada Ekadashi puja.
The Putrada Ekadashi mantra is the Gopal Mantra. Both husband and wife take the prasad post the puja as a form of blessing.

The DO’s and DON’Ts of Putrada Ekadashi
- Don’t gamble on Pausha Putrada Ekadashi.
- Pausha Putrada Ekadashi should be spent chanting mantras, staying awake, singing devotional songs in honour of Lord Vishnu.
- On the day of Pausha Putrada Ekadashi, refrain from lying or getting angry at someone.
- Try not to sleep throughout the day of Ekadashi.
How To Open Pausha Putrada Ekadashi Parana
Parana means opening the fast.
The Ekadashi vrat is opened the next day. The fast needs to Paraned within Dwadashi Tithi before dawn for fruitful results.
Make sure you do not open the fast during Hari Vasara and Madhyahna. Wait for Hari Vasara and Madhyahna to finish opening the fast. The most preferential time to open the fast is Pratahkal.
