About The Worship Lord Vishnu On Shravan Putrada Ekadashi

Every year, Ekadashi which falls in the Shukla Paksha of the Shravan month is celebrated as Shravana Putrada Ekadashi. In 2021, this Ekadashi will fall on 18th August. Putrada Ekadashi is celebrated twice a year. Ekadashi of Paush Shukla Paksha and Ekadashi of Shravan Shukla Paksha are called Putrada Ekadashi. Putrada Ekadashi in Paush month is popular in North Indian states, while in other states, people give more importance to Putrada Ekadashi during Shravan month.

Shravana Putrada Ekadashi Vrat Katha 

Long ago, there was a king named Suketuman, who ruled the city of Bhadravati Puri. The king got married with a lot of enthusiasm and excitement. But the queen could not beget a child even after a long time of marriage. This made the king and queen very sad. They thought continually about who would perform their last rites after their death.

The king used to continually think about the misfortune of him being childless. Once, in a gloomy mood, the king was roaming purposelessly in the countryside alone on his horse. He approached a forest and went inside it. Then, he reached the middle of the forest. He stopped there and drank water from a pond to quench his thirst. There he saw an ashram, inhabited by seers and sages. After drinking water, the king went to the Ashram. He found that the rishis were reciting the Vedic mantras. 

 

King Suketuman asked them why they were reciting the Vedas. The sages told them today is Putrada Ekadashi. The sages told the king that one who fasts and worships Lord Vishnu on this day is blessed with a child. When the king heard this, he felt very happy. He vowed to observe Putrada Ekadashi fast on that very day.  


So, king Suketuman fasted on Shravan Putrada Ekadashi and worshipped the Bal Gopal form of Vishnu and worshipped him. He observed a fast as well. As a result of this fast, the queen gave birth to a beautiful child. According to the tradition, if a person observes Putrada Ekadashi fast, he/she attains salvation.


Shravana Putrada Ekadashi - Know About Its Importance 


As per the belief, devotees keep this fast on this day to get children and for the long life of their children. By observing the fast of Shravan Putrada Ekadashi, all the troubles are removed and the children live long. On this day, the problems related to children are removed by observing a fast and fasting. Couples who wish to get childless or child happiness must observe this fast. If the couple observes a fast together, then it will get its fruits soon. Shravana Putrada Ekadashi Vrat Vidhi  


  • Get up early in the morning at Brahma Muhurta and get free from your daily activities.

  • After bathing yourself, clean the house for worship.


  • If you are a non-vegetarian, then eat only Satvik food for a few days before and for a few days after observing this fast.


  • Commit yourself to a fast before an idol or image of Lord Vishnu and light a lamp therein. 


  • Set up a Kalash and worship it by tying it with a red cloth.


  • Perform worship and aarti with sandalwood, vermilion, flowers etc. Thereafter, anoint them and offer prasad by offering fruits.


  • Offer fruits, flowers, coconut, betel, betel nut, clove, plum, gooseberry etc. to the idol or the image of Lord Vishnu.  


  • Try to make it a waterless, foodless fast. 


  • Carry out Lord’s bhajan-kirtan at night.


  •  Donate a lamp, it holds great importance.


  •  On the second day, take your meals only after giving food and Dakshina to Brahmins.


  • By virtue of this fast, a person can become an ascetic, scholar and prosperous. 


Shravana Putrada Ekadashi - Know About The Parana Method 


The word Parana stands for breaking the fast. Parana should be done before the end of Dwadashi Tithi. Not doing Parana on Dwadashi is tantamount to a crime. At the same time, you should perform Parana during Hari Vasara and mid-day. Then the right time to break the fast is early morning. If for some reason, you are not able to break the fast during the morning, then you should do it after midday.


Sometimes Shravan Putrada Ekadashi fast is observed for two consecutive days, like this time on 18th and 19th August. In such a situation, the householders should observe a fast on the first day. The second day fast, also known as the alternate Ekadashi fast, has been suggested in the Puranas for ascetics, widows and those seeking salvation, directly.
