Ganga Saptami, also known as Ganga Jayanti, is the reincarnation day of Goddess Ganga and is considered one of the most auspicious days for the Hindus. Ganga Saptami is observed on the ‘Saptami’, the 7th day of the bright moon period during the first Hindu month Vaishakha. On Ganga Saptami, devotees take a holy dip in the water, offer special prayer to the pious river and watch Ganga Aarti from the two most famous banks of the Ganges- Triveni Sangam in Allahabad and Rishikesh. Ganga Saptami is celebrated with full enthusiasm and zeal in the North Indian states.
River Ganga is considered to be the most sacred and holy of all rivers in India. It is believed that taking a bath in river Ganga gives a person freedom from all sins. Many devotees wish for a cremation near river Ganga as they consider the place as a path of salvation.
'Ganga Shobha Yatra' is organized at various ghats on Ganga Saptami. Since the water of Ganga is considered holy and equivalent to Amrit to all the Hindus, devotees perform 'Deepadan', a ritual to commemorate Goddess Ganga as a mother to attract fortune, health, and longevity, and family life on the auspicious occasion of Ganga Saptami.
