The final or last day of Ganpati or Ganesh Visarjan is the day of Anant Chaturdashi. This year it will be on Friday, 25 September 2026.

Is Anant Chaturdashi the 10th, 11th or 12th Day?

By tithi: Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated on the Chaturthi (4th) tithi in Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha. Anant Chaturdashi is the celebration on the Chaturdashi (14th); there are ten tithis between the Chaturthi and the Chaturdashi tithi making Chaturdashi as the eleventh tithi in the count and so the panchang consider receiving Ganepati as a ten-day celebration.

By calendar date: in 2026, Sthapana is on September 14 and Anant Chaturdashi on September 25, being the twelfth. The difference arises as tithi is not equal to exactly 24 hours, which makes the ceremonial calculations not to meet calendar calculations throughout the years.

What this means for you: count by date. If you celebrate for 5 days, do the visarjan on September 18, ignoring whatever the tithi number in the calendar may be. The calculation only matters for the Anant Chaturdashi itself, as it is the tithi which signals when to start observing and to perform the visarjan, the tithi being from the evening of September 24 to September 25.

Ganpati Visarjan Mantra

The traditional Ganpati Visarjan mantra is the punaragamanaya shloka, recited when taking leave of a deity at the close of puja:

यान्तु देवगणाः सर्वे पूजामादाय मामकीम् ।
इष्टकामप्रसिद्ध्यर्थं पुनरागमनाय च ॥

Yantu devaganah sarve pujamadaya mamakim |
Ishtakamaprasiddhyartham punaragamanaya cha ||

“May all the assembled deities depart, accepting my worship — and may they return again, for the fulfilment of my heart’s desires.”

The last words, punaragamanaya cha — “and for coming again” — carry the whole meaning of Visarjan. The farewell is written as an invitation.

Ganesh Visarjan Vidhi 2026: How To Perform Uttarpuja At Home

The closing ritual is called Uttarpuja – the “later worship,” counterpart to the Prana Pratishtha performed on Sthapana day. Where Prana Pratishtha invites the deity into the idol, Uttarpuja formally takes leave of him before the idol returns to water. It is performed at home, before the procession begins.

You can follow the below Ganpati Visarjan puja vidhi rituals before bidding farewell to Bappa:

1. Offer aarti to Lord Ganesha along with your family and friends in the morning. Sing the customary aarti song for Bappa. Two of the popular songs to be sung while performing aarti are ‘Sukh Karta Dukh Harta’ and ‘Jai Ganesh Deva’.
2. Light diyas and incense sticks, offer flowers, scent, and home-cooked sweets to the Lord.
3. As the Muhurat for Ganesh Visarjan approaches, everyone should come together in front of the puja altar. After performing aarti, they can take Ganesha’s idol and leave the house.
4. Just before taking the idol completely from its place, move it a bit towards you slowly. This means the ending of Bappa’s stay at your home and heading for the Visarjan. Ensure that all the family members are present this time at home and while going for Visarjan.
5. Thank the Lord for residing at your place with you, and offer your love for listening to your prayers. Express your gratitude for receiving immense happiness and blessings that Bappa showered during their stay. Be grateful to the Lord for removing all the obstacles from your path. Thanking plays a vital part in pleasing the Lord and making him feel loved.
6. Offer akshata (a mixture of raw rice and turmeric powder) to Ganpati Bappa. Keep some curd in Bappa’s hands.
7. Place a dry coconut, jaggery, and 5 grains in a red cloth. Keep this tied cloth near Bappa, it acts as a meal for the Lord’s travel.
8. Sprinkle some water on the individual conducting the rituals for Ganpati Visarjan.
9. Take the Lord’s idol, hold him, and take a stroll around your home. This will fill Ganesha’s presence and grace in your house including bedrooms, kitchen, and other rooms.
10. Keep singing ‘Ganpati Bappa Morya‘ and other mantras together with full enthusiasm and happiness.
11. Come out of your home, holding Bappa’s idol. Another person should hold a coconut in their hands, make 3 circles over the Lord’s head, and break it on the floor. Keep the coconut with you, and start your journey to the Visarjan place. The coconut should be immersed during Visarjan along with the idol.
12. Once you reach the spot, keep the idol on a table and perform aarti for the final time along with everyone.
13. Take out all the ornaments of flowers and outer drapes from the idol. Discard or keep the removed decorations in a proper area of disposition.
14. Finally, take the idol and immerse it at the Visarjan place.
