Story of Devshayani Ekadashi (Devshayani Ekadashi ki Katha)
There was a Chakravarti king named Mandhata in the Suryavansh, who was truthful and great in power. He was devoted to his subjects. All his subjects were rich and happy. No one had any problem in his kingdom. Once there was no rain in that kingdom for three years and there was a famine. The people became very sad due to the lack of food grains. Even the yajnas (sacrifices) in the kingdom stopped. Seeing this calamity, one day the king went towards the forest with some army. He went to the ashram of many sages and finally reached the ashram of Angira Rishi, son of Brahmaji. There the king bowed to Angira Rishi and humbly said, O Lord! Despite following the religion in all ways, there is a famine in my kingdom. Due to this the people are very sad. It is said in the scriptures that the subjects suffer due to the effect of the sins of the king. When I rule according to Dharma, how did famine occur in my kingdom? I have not been able to find out the reason for this till now. Then Angira Rishi told the king to observe the Padma Ekadashi fast of the Shukla Paksha of Ashad month in a proper manner. Due to the effect of the fast, there will be rain in your kingdom and the people will be happy because the fast of this Ekadashi gives all the siddhis and destroys all the troubles. If you observe the fast of this Ekadashi along with the people, servants and ministers, then you will definitely get the result.
On hearing this statement of the sage, the king returned to his city and observed the Ekadashi fast in a proper manner. Due to the effect of that fast, it rained and the people returned to happiness and prosperity like before. Therefore, all humans should observe the Ekadashi fast of this month. This fast gives enjoyment in this world and salvation in the next world. By reading and listening to this story, all the sins of a man are destroyed.
