Name –

The word “Amethyst” gets its name from Middle English word Amatist, from Latin Amethystus and from the Greek word Amethustos, meaning not drunk or not intoxicating. This stone was originally believed to protect an individual from drunkenness or intoxication. A very pretty semi-precious gemstone available in a range of enchanting hues of purple, Amethyst is still believed to prevent disillusions, insomnia and illnesses of mind. It is the birthstone for the people born in the month of February.

Formation – This stone is formed in alluvial deposits and geodes.
Sources – Amethyst from the Urals is known to have a reddish tinge; the Canadian Amethyst is violet. Other places, which are known for Amethyst mining or production include Sri Lanka, India, Uruguay, Madagascar, U.S.A, Germany, Australia, Nambia and Zambia.

Available colours – The purest form of Amethyst is colourless, while the finest quality Amethysat is found in shades of purple, lilac and mauve.

Properties:- SG – 2.65, RI – 1.54 – 1.55, Hardness – 7 On heating Amethyst, its colour changes to yellow, as it produces citrine on heat application.
