It is called Nirjala Ekadashi because of Nirjala, i.e. fasting without water. Nirjala Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month is also known as Bhimseni Ekadashi. By observing fast and fasting on this Ekadashi, a person attains long life and salvation. It is believed that observing this Ekadashi gives the same result as fasting for all the 24 Ekadashis of the year.

The legend related to this fast is related to the Mahabharata period. According to the legend, once Mahabali Bhima had a desire to fast and asked Maharishi Vyas to know about it. He told his troubles to him that his mother, brother and wife all fast on the day of Ekadashi, but they find it difficult to fast due to lack of appetite. On this, Maharishi Vyas asked Bhima to observe the fast of Nirjala Ekadashi of Jyeshtha month, describing it as auspicious. He said that during this fast water can be taken in Achaman, but food is avoided. After this, Bhima got freedom from sins by observing this fast with strong will.

Nirjala Ekadashi Worship Method
– The observance of the rules of fasting of Nirjala Ekadashi starts from the tenth day.
– The fasting should recite the mantra “Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya”.
– Donating cow on this day has special significance.
– To observe fast on this day. It is auspicious to do extra chanting, tapas, Ganga bath etc. After fasting, bathing, charity and food should be given to Brahmins on the Dwadashi date.
