A Mini Guide To Shambhavi Mudra Kriya

Shambhavi mudra is a very powerful mudra that helps to raise our bar of consciousness and attain a state of ecstasy. People often think Shambhavi is a breathing technique or is meditation. But that is not valid; Shambhavi is a mudra or a kriya that helps you experience the powerful and positive energies of the cosmos. It is also the mudra done during meditation.

Before we get into the details, first let us know what kriya or mudra is?

Kriya is a Sanskrit word referred to as a completed action. At the same time, mudra means to seal it. In the field of yoga, it means it is an action to achieve the desired result. Kriya consists of various levels of mantras, pranayama, techniques that will help you get immune and absorb the universe’s energy. It helps to climb the dimensional ladder of spirituality and feel the state of ecstasy and tranquillity.

Shambhavi mudra is essential and is a mandate now more than ever as it will help us fill the power within us, which is sparse or distributed around everywhere. Because of large amounts of activities and unnecessary pressure, we put our senses in the form of technology or indulging in rigorous negativity.

Shambhavi Mahamudra Steps

Try to find a quiet place and sit in any of the asanas such as Padmasana, Sukhasana or Siddhasana.

Rest the palms on your knees with your finger in chin mudra.

We cannot see the centre of the eyebrows or where our eyebrows meet at the centre. However, Shambhavi is an attempt to focus between the eyebrows.

Roll your eyes up and gaze at the centre of the eyebrows.

Once you gaze up at the centre, you will notice both the eyebrows as a curved line in the centre and a v-shaped line dipped in the middle.

Focus your eyes and concentrate on the lower dip of the v shape.

Maintain the gaze as long as you can.

In the beginning, you may feel pain in your muscles. At that time, try to relax your eyes and get them back to the normal position.

Rest for some time. And try it again.

You may not be able to do it for longer times initially. However, do not be disheartened because with practice gradually, you can hold the gaze for a longer time. Another thing to make sure of is to breathe while doing Shambhavi. As you practise more, gradually, your breath will become more subtle.

While releasing the mudra state, first remove the chin mudra.

  1. Stop the gaze, relax your eyes.
  2. Get your hands back on your thighs.
  3. Now relax and breathe freely.

Shambhavi is a mudra that takes you deep inside to the steadiest state of meditation.

Benefits Of Shambhavi Mudra Meditation

Better Cardiovascular Health

Shambhavi is known to increase Heart Rate Variability during practice. As per medical science, the higher the heart rate variable, the calmer is the person during a stressful situation, and the better are the chances of survival. Individuals with lower heart rate variability may face issues such as hypertension, heart failures etc. Practise of Shambhavi decreases the chances of cardiac problems and hypertension.

Better Integration Of Brain

Practising the kriya betters the alliance or integrates the left and right spheres of the brain. Higher integration within the brain is related to higher IQ, creativity, higher EQ (emotional quotient) and flexibility. Higher the brain’s coherence, higher the exchange of information and faster signals from the brain, which also leads to better coordination of the brain with other organs.

There are alpha, beta, delta and theta signals that the brain generates. Individuals who practised Shambhavi had higher alpha power, which means that the stress levels go low. Beta power denotes mental tension and anxiety that decreases because of meditation. Theta and delta activity spike indicates the increase of conscious level into a deeper level of meditation.

Sleep Quality is Improved

Shambhavi helps in increasing sleep efficiency and sleep quality as well. Midnight sleep awakening will be reduced post practising Shambhavi mudra. There is quite a positive effect on sleep after Shambhavi.

Focus and Concentration is Improved

Meditation improves the allocation of the brain’s attention sources, which helps to sustain focus and attention. There are fundamental and architectural changes made, which allows better concentration after the practice of Kriya.

Regulating Menstrual Health

Menstrual Health is a topic of concern. Many women are suffering from issues related to menstruation, be it PCOS, PCOD or other problems. Menstruation health puts social, psychological effects on the person. For conditions such as PCOS or PCOD, there is no medicine or cure as such. The medication includes popping contraceptive pills, which is not very good for fertility in the longer run. Another or the only solution recommended for PCOD is a lifestyle change. Yoga is recommended even by medical supervisors to be made a part of daily routine.

Performing Shambhavi Mudra has positive effects on PCOS and PCOD; it also reduces the pain during menstruation. It helps get over mood swings, depression, bloating and weight gain that women face during menstruation.

Note: Best time to do shambhavi mahamudra is brahma muhurta (anywhere between 3.30 a.m. to 5.00 or 6.00 a.m.).

Other Benefits of Shambhavi Mudra

Shambhavi mudra helps to strengthen the eye muscles. It also helps to improve the third eye chakra which is also called Ajna Chakra.

Shambhavi Mudra Meditation on Doshas

Shambhavi Mudra has an immense balancing effect between your mind and body. It helps balance the physical and the mental dosha within the body, therefore negating the tridosha in the body. It balances Tama and raja doshas of the mind, along with alochaka pitta near the eye. Vatta, Pitta and Kapha are uniformly balanced by Shambhavi.

Shambhavi Mudra Yoga

The power of this kriya is to seal and lock the energy. You cannot see the effects of other meditation from day one, but with Shambhavi, you can notice the results from the first day itself.

If done correctly, Shambhavi can rightly direct the energies to the paths where you may not expect.

Shambhavi Mahamudra Practice

Shambhavi Mudra is a kriya that seals the energy and directs it to beneficial purposes. It involves mudras, pranayama, mantra etc., which is an additional benefit to the core of meditation. Shambhavi is an amplification of the Ajna Chakra or focusing on the third eye, which helps in neurochemical changes that improve the brain and the body’s functioning.

The magnetic energy drawn from the mudra takes the mind in a mighty state. The third eye pressure draws further into spiritual development, which further could open doors to dhyana. The neurochemical changes observed lead to feeling empowered, contented, always at peace, and focused on your goals.

The meditation practises involve learning and living in the state of mindfulness, learning the process of being aware of the surrounding and being undisturbed.

Shambhavi Mahamudra is a technique practised in Isha Institute and taught by the modern sage Sadhguru. Shambhavi Mahamudra cannot be done by just reading instructions from the internet; it needs to be practised with an experienced teacher or a Yoga Guru.

Conclusion

Shambhavi mudra is a technique that gives you a state of tranquillity. It is a mudra that not only gives you physical benefits but psychological and spiritual benefits as well.

You will notice a transformation of your energy levels and will get drawn with your inner dimension rather than being prey to the outer materialistic environment.
