March 23 – The Day Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, & Rajguru Were Martyred!

Shaheed Diwas History:

On March 23, 1931, three young revolutionaries Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were hanged to death by British rulers for the assassination of British Police Officer John Saunders. Bhagat Singh with his companions Rajguru, Sukhdev, Gopal and Azad fought for the assassination of Lala Lajpat Rai.

On April 8, 1929, Bhagat Singh together with his companions threw bombs over the Central Legislative Assembly, shouting the slogan “Inquilab Zindabad”. The bomb didn’t kill anyone but did injure a few. Bhagat Singh could have escaped but he and his companions stayed there without fear. As a result, Bhagat Singh was arrested. Sukhdev was arrested after police located the bomb factory in Lahore. British rulers then charged Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru for killing Saunders and sentenced them to death on March 24. But they were hanged a day before on March 23, 1931 at 7.30 pm.

The bodies of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were cremated on the banks of the Sutlej River. Due to his exceptional patriotism, Bhagat Singh an inspiration for generations to come.

To honor the freedom fighters of the Nation, several other days are also declared as Martyr’s Day:

• January 30 – This day is celebrated as Shaheed Diwas in the memory of Mahatma Gandhi. On January 30, 1948, Gandhiji was assassinated at Gandhi Smriti in the Birla House.
• July 13 – Jammu & Kashmir celebrates July 13 as Shaheed Diwas to memorize the death of 22 people who were killed by the royal soldiers while demonstrating adjacent to the Maharaja Hari Singh of Kashmir.
• November 17 – In Odisha, November 17 is celebrated as Martyr’s Day to observe the death anniversary of Lala Lajpat Rai who was also known as the “Lion Of Punjab ” and had played an important role in the freedom struggle of India.
• November 19 – Jhansi celebrates November 19 as Shaheed Diwas to give tribute to Rani Lakshmi Bai who had also sacrificed her life during the revolt against the Britishers.
