Swine flu onslaught: Blame it on the planets

With the onslaught of the killer swine flu virus gathering speed in the last few days, India is struggling to survive a severe health scare. Though the flu has spread panic across the globe, the high mortality rate in the country is sending shivers down the spine of one and all. The virus has reportedly claimed 33 lives and the count threatens to increase in the days to come. The flu has also disrupted the life in several metro cities across the country and people are living under constant fear.

By the time scientists manage to come up with a vaccine that can cure Swine flu, the death toll is likely to cross hundred.

Though cases of H1N1 influenza have been reported from across the country, the hardest hit state is Maharashtra with its two mega-cities, Pune and Mumbai (in that order), currently topping the list of reported H1N1 cases and related casualties.

In March and April 2009, hundreds of cases of respiratory illness caused by swine influenza were reported in Mexico. Reports of such cases in other countries soon followed. However, it seems that the panic is spreading across the globe faster than the virus itself. The fear, however, is not unfounded.
