Name – The name “Opal” has been derived from the the Latin word Opalus, meaning ‘seeing jewel’. Another theory is that the word “Opal” comes from Upala, a Sanskrit word meaning a precious stone.

Formation

Opal fills cavities in sedimentary rocks or veins in igneous rocks. It forms stalagmites or stalactites, and replaces organic material in fossil wood, shell and bone.

Sources – The main producer of Opal has been Australia since the 19th century. Other producers of Opal include Czechoslovakia, U.S.A, Brazil, Mexico and Southern Africa.

Available colours – Opal is fundamentally colourless, but such high-quality gemstone is rarely found. Disseminated impurities generally impart to Opal various dull body colours that range from the pale whites to yellows and reds derived from iron oxides to black from manganese oxides and organic carbon.
