Kapha is one of the doshas of Ayurveda which is composed of earth and water. It has the quality of forming a united whole to maintain a particular form.

Kapha is essentially required to lubricate the joints, saturate the skin, and is vital for the body to protect the tissues and fight against the exterior cells. The person with Kapha dosha has a compact body type and is heavy on the lower part. They are usually overweight. Mucus and other milky secretions are overly produced in the Kapha individuals.

Kapha radiates strength and maintains balance to an extent that the people of Vata and Pitta get rejuvenated in the presence. People with Kapha dosha can be characterized by their voluminous figure, doe-eyed, baby clean skin, thick hair, calm and composed nature.

Kapha types are usually low on energy. They may even on days wake up feeling exhausted and hence do not participate in many activities.

  • Just like pitta individuals, Kapha individuals also should avoid nuts as they are rich in fat.
  • Cut down on the sugar intake as consumption of more sugar increases the Kapha in the body.
  • Try to consume low-fat milk by adding turmeric or ginger to the hot milk to lessen the Kapha spiking properties.
  • Avoid sour and rich fruits such as dates, coconuts, melon, oranges, melons, avocados. Consume lighter fruits such as apples and pears
  • Honey is excellent to balance Kapha.
  • Try to inculcate more barley and millet in the diet instead of wheat and rice as that aggravates Kapha
  • Try to cut down on salt drastically

Along with maintaining a healthy diet, the time it is consumed is also important. Hence, try to maintain the timings, and consume at the set time daily. Kapha individuals should consume three or two meals a day.

Overeating and emotional eating aggravate Kapha. Hence, try to pay complete attention while eating. Avoid distractions such as watching tv or talking. Avoid desserts, junk food, bread, or any other form of fast food.

Digestion is particularly slow in the Kapha individuals. Hence, try to stick to light and food that can be easily digested.

Kapha doshas can sleep for a longer duration. They can sleep for a minimum of 8 hours. However, they should ideally sleep only for 7 hours. If they sleep after 6 am which is the dominant time for  Kapha then, they may find it very hard to get up from the bed. Hence, it is best if they wake up at 6 am to avoid recuperation.

Kapha Dosha Symptoms

Kapha dosha includes the following symptoms

Pale skin, stickiness in the body waste such as sweat, urine, etc. Slow senses, asthma, cough, diabetes, etc. They are usually lethargic, unenthusiastic, and feel overly attached. Kapha individuals are always sleeping, they do not like change.

Kapha Dosha Remedies

Fasting helps Kapha individuals lose weight and accelerate digestion. Smoking of anti-Kapha herbs also helps with Kapha. Intake of food that has Kapha reducing properties normally helps a lot. The food could be sharp, dry, hot, bitter. Add honey and pungent fermented dishes to your diet. Sunbath, herbal paste massage is beneficial.

Rigorous cardio exercises should be practised such as running, walking, jumping, etc.

Use olive oil, almond oil, or ghee for cooking. Nuts should not be consumed. However, if a necessity, eat sunflower and pumpkin seeds instead of heavy cashews and pistachios.
