The Crystals….and Gemstones
A crystal stone is defined by the dictionary as a ‘solid body having a characteristic internal structure, enclosed by symmetrically arranged plane surfaces, intersecting at definite and characteristic angles.’ Crystals, technically speaking, are naturally occurring rocks/ stones/ solid formations, which are created by great heat and environmental changes, which take place over the course of many years, sometimes hundreds to thousands.
Most crystals, as used and derived naturally, are usually stones of myriad colours, used since the ancient days for healing purposes, worn even as talismans and amulets. However, in the present day, apart from still being used for healing purposes and as fortune stones, they are also used in ornaments and jewellery making.
There are myriad forms of crystals. Many gemstones, or rather most of them, are technically crystals, as their natural formation process happens by crystallization. But, the gemstones are often denser, rarer and harder, and come in varied colours and lustres, which make them classifiable, as per their minerals, properties and uses in Ayurveda and Astrology.
Healing stones, crystals and precious gemstones all come from the Mother Earth. Created from the magma or earth’s inner core, these crystals have gone through a geologic process of heating, cooling and displacement on their way to their present form.
Crystal, in its most natural form, is considered to be the only ‘live stone’ or a rock/ stone that tends to grow on its own, when left in suitable conditions. There are Crystal Trees or Crystal mountains, with clusters of crystals growing
The energy field of different crystals as well as stones is influenced by their geometric form, colour and subtle vibrations, which result from their age, mineral composition, trapped heat and other natural properties, which get imbibed on their way of hardening, crystallization and formation.
Bigger gemstones or crystals are made up of millions of minute crystals, which are in constant motion, thus continuously emitting energy at different frequencies. That is another reason, crystals are widely used in healing.
The crystals’ colours also play a dynamic role in their healing power. The play of light and colour can stimulate or calm; purify or heal; harness positive energies and absorb negative energies.
Ancient civilizations such as the Chinese, Egyptians, Sumerians, Greeks, Romans, or Shamans and even medical men have used crystals for healing in multiple ways – grinding them into powders or elixirs, worn, carried or placed on the body and in ceremonies or rituals. This ancient knowledge about such stones has been passed down to our day and with the emerging popularity of holistic health and healing.
Even the Indian science of medicine Ayurveda and another popular form of medicine Unani (Greek) use gemstones and crystals avidly in creation of their medicines. In Ayurveda, the finely powdered Bhasma of precious stones like Pearl and Red Coral are avidly used, along with precious metal Bhasma, to create some of its medicines.
Crystals are a part of the earth itself. They are made up of quartz and silica, which are also major components in the human body, and they may or may not be gemstones. Like colour, crystals also emit a vibrational frequency, which matches the electromagnetic field of both the earth and its human occupants. The most widely used crystal today is clear quartz and it can be found powering watches, computers and radios to name a few.
Rough crystals are found in their natural state as they were broken or mined from rocks. Left in their natural condition, the surface of these stones is irregular and rough and thus they contain the greatest amount of healing power. They can be placed gently on the body to transmit and focus healing energies.
Polished crystals are those which have rolled down or tumbled with water and sand, thus getting a relatively smoother, more rounded surface. They are often used as touch-stones, and may be carried in a pocket or purse as talismans. The smooth finish of these crystals lends well to healing and related processes, as they may be held, stroked, rubbed or placed directly on the body.
Jewellery fashioned with healing crystals also contains the stone’s vital energy. The precious metals and colours used in the design will also enhance the stone’s power. Jewellery studded with crystals can be created for particular health needs or to create harmonious vibrations, and aid in harnessing positive intentions for protection, prosperity, passion, recovery, clarity, love, good health, peace and other blessings.
Different crystals are also used in other forms of healing like Reiki and Pranic Healing. These subjects believe and often prove with good results that pyramid shaped crystals and other crystals can be used to cleanse one’s aura and also the energy in and around a premises. Pyramid shaped crystals are kept in home/ offices to absorb negative energies.
