Finding out how compatible two individuals are using astrology is an art that has been used since ages. Astrological compatibility or Synastry studies relationships by comparing Natal horoscopes. We know that each individual has a unique birth horoscope and is born with certain characteristics that define the nature of each individual. These characteristics are decided by the ruling planet and the specific elements governing that particular individual. Thus, by analysing the birth charts of the two individuals whose compatibility is to be ascertained, the influences of various planets and their positions in the birth charts of the two individuals play a vital role. If the planet of one person has conjunction with planet of his partner then it shows good relations between them. The opposition can bring out attraction or competition. Sextiles and trines show the adjusting capabilities of two individuals for each other. In this manner, the degree of compatibility between two individuals can be found out with the aid of Western astrology principals which places prime importance on the position of Sun at the time of an individual’s birth.
The Hindu or Indian system of determining compatibility between two persons is unique and is termed as ‘Kundli Matching’. In this system, prime importance is given to the position occupied by the Moon at the time of the births of the two individuals whose compatibility is to be judged. Based on moon signs, the following aspects are examined: Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Gana, Graha Maitri, Bhakoota, Nadi, Mahendra, Vedha, Rajju, Stree Deergha, Linga, Gotra, Pakshi, Chandra Yoga, Ayya Varga and Yujja for checking compatibility. However, in one particular system of Kundli matching, only eight of these factors are given importance and are assigned numerical values. Varna (1 point), Vashya (2 Points), Tara (3 points), Yoni (4 points), Graha Maitri (5 points), Gana (6 points), Bhakoota (7 points) and Nadi (8 points). Thus, the total of these eight factors considered comes to 36 points, and two individuals are considered as compatible if the Kundli matching score is more than 18 points.
In the Chinese astrology compatibility, prime importance is given to the Five Elements Theory. The five elements, called ‘Wu-xing’ in Chinese are metal, wood, water, fire and soil. The relations between these elements are interpolation, interaction, over action, and counter-action, which are believed to be the common law of the motions and changes of the creatures in the universe. Based on the interactions between these elements, it can be determined whether two individuals are compatible with each other or not. Whatever method we may use for deriving compatibility between two individuals, it helps to realize that a relationship between two people will work only when both are ready to adapt and adjust with each other. If both are willing to work on a relationship, its destined to succeed.
